High Aspirations Bright Futures

Summer Term in 4S

Please ensure your child works hard to achieve their targets.

I think we have chosen a great topic of the Arctic judging on the weather outside! The children have really enjoyed making models of the Arctic from salt dough, painting them and using an atlas to find the countries that surround it. We will continue to learn about the animals and the affects of global warming on this part of the world.

Please continue to support your children with their reading and homework so that they are continuing to learn at home.

A big welcome back to 4S and we wish everyone a Happy New Year!! This term our topic we will be learning about is 'The Arctic'. I am sure they will tell you all about what they learn!! Can we just remind parents and carers to read with your children. It makes such a difference to their academic learning. Also 4S have to give their homework in every Friday.

What an amazing trip we had at Salmesbury Hall!! We were met in the Great Hall by King Henry VIII and Mistress Marjorie!!!! We were taken on a tour of Salmesbury Hall by Mistress Marjorie, who the children thought was a very funny character!!!! After lunch we met with King Henry VIII, who taught us all about some Tudor history and how to draw our own family shields!!!! Ask your children about what they learnt about the ghost of the White Lady who is rumoured to walk the halls daily!!!

4S have been creating their very own 'Poetry Pebbles'! All the children were asked to write a word of their choice onto a pebble and then decorate them to look extra super! After they were all finished, we had a walk down to the school allotment, and we created a 'Poetry Corner 'for everybody who is visiting the allotment to be inspired by!!!! Other children visiting can put all the different words together and make their very own poem. How Exciting!!!!

We are so lucky at Meadowhead Juniors to have a super library! Mrs Sudworth has worked so hard to fill our shelves with a range of books from classic tales such as 'Fantastic Mr Fox', to brand new ones like 'Marvel Heroes'!!! At least once a week, 4S get the chance to have some library time, to go and choose a book and relax on the cushions or the bean bags. The children always enjoy their visits.

Meadowhead Junior School were so lucky to have a visit from Craig Bradley, who is well known in the poetry world! I have never seen the children and teachers laugh so much, and be inspired by the words and poems he taught us all!! Craig did a special assembly for the whole school telling us his funny poems, singing songs and playing his guitar! He then ran workshops for the children throughout the day. We cannot wait for his return!
This week has been National Poetry Week! To celebrate this we have been writing our own poetry about 'Emotions'. In their poems, the children had to use either rhymes, similies, rhythm and other different poetry techniques. All the poems are going to be entered into a national poetry competition, and by look of the amazing poetry 4S have come up with, we will definitely have some winners!!

National Poetry Week

Today we have been celebrating SEWA day! This is a day to think about doing an act of kindness for somebody else. We did this by making cards for elderly residents at a local care home. We filled the cards with lovely words and a tea bag!
What a super afternoon 4S had having a go at Archery! The Blackburn Archery Club came into school to teach all the children how to be aim and throw a bow and arrow! The children had so much fun and we had some superb throws!! Look out for letters to follow, as an afterschool Archery club will be starting after half term!

An Afternoon of Archery!!

4S have been learning in R.E about how it feels to be a creator. To understand this, they used plasticine to make creations of creatures they would find under the sea. The creatures were that good, they have been put on display in the classroom!
We had such a great day for Roald Dahl day. The children dressed as their favourite characters, we had a class full of Willy Wonka's, Fantastic Mr Foxes and Witches!!!! 4S made a superb Peach Crumble, as we have been reading the book James and The Giant Peach. Everybody had a taste and most thought it was delicious!

Making Peach Crumble for Roald Dahl day!

This term, in our music lessons we are learning to sing and play instruments to some of 'Abba's popular songs, 'Mamma Mia' and 'Dancing Queen' to name a few!! The teachers are having as much fun as the children learning them! We used recorders and glockenspiels to play the tune of Dancing Queen this week!
The topic the children in 4S are learning all about this term is 'Atlantis'! In English they have been having so much fun using fabric pens to draw and write some fantastic ideas onto cloth. They had to use their imagination to create a story about somehow being taken under the sea, how would they get there?, what creatures would they see? how exciting!!
