Swimming (Reviewed 15/11/18)

The National Curriculum states that:

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

In order to meet these requirements, Meadowhead Community Junior School use the professional services of Half Fish, based at Daisyfield swimming pool, Blackburn.

2017/18

The percentage of children from Year 6 (July 2018) who can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m is  68%.  These children could all swim effectively using front crawl and breaststroke.  60% could also swim effectively using backstroke.

95% of the cohort could perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

This year we have not provided swimming provision over and above the national curriculum requirements.

2018/19

In Summer 2018, we changed swimming provision from Blackburn with Darwen to Half fish due to concerns about the quality of that provision.  By using a new provider, we are more confident that we can raise the percentage of children who can swim at least 25m and swim effectively using front crawl, breaststroke and backstroke.

We also aim to use some Sports premium funding to facilitate additional swimming to support children in achieving 25m.
