Music

Intent Statement:

The Junior Jam Music curriculum believes in providing pupils with a rich and diverse music education.  Music is fundamental to helping unlock children’s creative potential. Through focussing on a different instrument each half-term, the music provision sets out to allow children a broad range of musical experiences and allows children to explore their talents and passions.

Implementation Statement:

The Junior Jam Music curriculum is designed to build on students' previous knowledge and skills through a progressive approach. Throughout the year, pupils engage in six units that encompass a variety of musical activities.

The curriculum includes:

  • Music Theory: Lessons that incorporate keyboards to develop foundational skills.
  • Instrumental Play: Opportunities to play chime bars, African drums, boomwhackers, and keyboards.
  • Vocal and Instrumental Percussion: Students recreate popular songs, enhancing their performance skills.
  • Singing: Regular practice to improve vocal technique and confidence.
  • Songwriting: Creative sessions using glockenspiels to encourage original composition.
  • Samba Drumming: Engaging rhythms that introduce students to different musical styles.

This holistic approach ensures that students not only learn music theory but also develop practical skills and a love for music through hands-on experiences.

The cross - curricular opportunities incorporate more sophisticated activities such as iSong, iDance, and iRemix in Years 3 to 6, where students create music, explore various genres, and experiment with remixing and composing digital content.

Impact Statement

The Junior Jam music curriculum ensures that by the time pupils leave Meadowhead Juniors, they have a well-rounded understanding of musicality. Through a diverse range of activities—such as music theory, instrumental practice, singing, songwriting, and ensemble work—students build a solid foundation in both practical skills and musical concepts. This comprehensive approach fosters creativity, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation for music, equipping them with the confidence and knowledge to pursue further musical experiences.
